A mobile milking robot is an innovative concept where an automatic milking robot is used in a movable manner, for example in combination with intensive grazing or in a more flexible business operation. 

This can offer advantages for farmers who want to milk their cows more in the pasture without having to return to the barn each time.

The use of mobile milking robots in the Netherlands is currently limited and is in the pioneering phase. Although the concept was introduced a few years ago, only a handful of dairy farmers have actually implemented this technology.
The technology offers potential, but large-scale adoption has yet to occur.

How does a mobile milking robot work?

A mobile milking robot is essentially a standalone milking unit that:

• Is movable and can be deployed in different fields.
• Can be self-sufficient with solar panels or generators for power and water.

• Energy and water supply – A mobile robot requires power, water, and cooling, which can be challenging in the pasture.
• Cow recognition and routing – How do you ensure the right cows are milked on time and the milk flow remains optimal?
• Investment and payback period – Mobile robots are innovative but not yet widely available, making the costs higher than a standard milking robot.
